We Own The Shadows. We Ride the Nights.

I'm not sure if he was thinking logically. Yeah, he was drunker than shit. Mobility down to a minimum. So when I seen him listing to his right, I instantly thought that he was bedding down for the evening. The small sidewalk he was sitting on was occupied by ample, but mostly empty, beer bottles, beer cans, whiskey bottles and Red Cups. I must stress the words MOSTLY EMPTY... That's one great point about drinking. Anywhere can be comfortable if your drunk enough.

This particular fellow had fought the good fight. He gave it his all. It was time for him to succumb to the natural eventuality that faces all binge drinkers: Puking, passing-out and dealing with hang-overs... The big three.

He had taken his first step, but not the second. He rose from his listing revealing that he had deposited puke into the Red Cup right up to the cups rim. Trusted confidant, Juice By Jerry and I, had asked him if everything was Ok. Life had its fair share of tragedies and we didn't need any more if we could help it. He responded with a thumbs up and, as Juice would explain, in Mixed Martial Arts, a thumbs-up shows cognitive function. The fellow was 'still with us' ready to move onward in his journey... Steps two and three were before him and we would find out, he would conqur them.

The next day he approached Juice by Jerry and I with thanks for taking a minute to make sure this he was ok... As the story would become revealed in bits, he would explain that he was sitting next to a Red Cup up that, according to him, had a small amount of puke already in it. He filled it to the rim so as not to make a grand mess of things on the sidewalk I died the compound. I shuddered. I didn't want to learn anymore! I could draw my own conclusions. This tale would become much more twisted though. The Red Cup in question was later (the next day) mistaken for holding what appeared to be an untouched Red Cup of Sangria.

Gross.

In Cincinnati Ohio, on the otherside of an invisible and maybe even non-existing dividing line (depending on who you talk to), during one city-wide music fest that's growing larger and larger each year, and another one. The other one... There was a vast shadow thrown over three amazing days in September in a booze drenched basement and its pebble gravel sparkling compound... Where, in that gravel compound, a good look around would show that it was littered with broken glass from multiple colored liquor bottles shimmering. The compounds gravel mixed with the broken glass that gave the spot the appearance of being a sparking beach. That broken glass compound enhancement, coupled with multiple sillouettes of Rock and Roll rejects binge-drinking under the backdrop of the smell of burning leaves and near-pandemic levels of pink-eye, was still a great sight to see after all these years.

I accepted my newfound epiphany of that moment of looking, listening and appreciating. There's a spot within a spot. A thing within a thing... Hidden in plain sight... It has a soundtrack, a cast of heroes, and villains. We have our place. We are that broken glass... We own the shadows. We ride the night.

Feeble Attempt to Relay the Greatness of Parquet Courts

What a great band! Filling an indescribable vacancy in my trek to listen to meaningful music at loud volumes. Sunbathing Animals delivers a sound leaving me wondering if II found 'it' or maybe 'it' found me... With 'it' being Parquet Courts (PC)! The last time I experienced a similar feeling like this, or anything close to the feeling, was when I bought an early EP collection of Clinic...Sunbathing Animalshas, just as their other releases, is the epitome of what I would call a fresh sound. The approach PC takes to music, their music, is wide and unfocused, other times beautifully complicated with feedback and irregular song structures. At other moments PC seemingly leave you wondering and trying to define exactly what the fuck is happening. Don't forget their expansive and inter-personal Dylan like lyrics. I found myself approaching PC lyrics the same way I do Bob Dylan's songs. Yeah, Im not sure what Maggie's Farm is, but I know that I dont wanna work there no more... Trying to peg PC down with words (and failing horribly) try to magine if Thurston Moore fronted Spoon who really may get into Lou Reeds way of storytelling with song. Sunbathing Animalshas loose moments, noisy moments, and moments that some may dispell as wrong-- beautifully, expertly wrong! PCs music is adventuresome and Sunbathing Animals totally peeks my interest. I wish more bands were like this but then again, I don't.

Listen, Embrace, Destroy with Necros, TKO's, Latin Dogs, Vegetable,Loons and Bad Habit,

THE BIG DUKE SIX-1
Necros, TKO's, Latin Dogs, Vegetable, Loons, Bad Habit,

The ALL-NEW Atrocity Exhibition

I was bothered to say the least and even though Dayton area podcasteer Izzy Rock had posted on his wall the link to a video that consisted of the gruesome beheading of four women by Mexican drug cartels. Izzy himself issued proclamation that he didn't watch the video but knew already how bad things were was the smart thing to do. It was also the strongest thing he, or anyone else could do.
Me? I was week... after the recent video beheading of journalist by Islamic fundamentalist I will admit, I searched an uncomfortable amount of time On the web that I'm willing to admit, searching for those videos. I was never 'lucky' enough to find them.

So when an opportunity to watch the Mexican Drug Cartels, a group of people known for their harsh brutality, I watched as four women were degraded, made to say something that was in Spanish and unknown to me and butted in the head repeatedly with the gun barrels of automatic weapons speared into their heads. Suddenly, and without warning, the women are grabbed and beheaded partway with smaller knives leading the way for an axe-man to finish what the knife couldn't do; sever the spinal column of each victim.

I learned my lesson. I seen enough and for what it's worth, I felt awful. As if the act itself wasn't enough, the blog that posited this video* accompanied by a similar rant that you just read was an ad sponsored blog... Some of you may have noticed that adverts are now on Thwart... I'm rethinking that after seeing this video on that blog. Below the video, in a overly 'healthy' dose of irony, truly, made my heart hurt...

There was an advertisement for Bounty Paper Towels... 'The Quicker a Picker-Upper'

Of all the battles and causes the United States takes up and puts on their shoulders...Of all the enemies faced, sometimes, a threat in someones back yard is overlooked. Whatever may become of Boko-Haram, ISIS/ISIL, Hamas, Hezbolah, Ukraine, South Sudan or any other hot-spot around the world I'm forgetting, save some bombs for the cartels!

Below, You will find screen captures from the blog where I initially watched the video. I was hoping to recapture the video with the Bounty advert which I failed in accomplishing... however, OTHER ads had similar ironic, even a Situationist-feel. Truth is Sicker than Fiction.

* No, I won't share the Blog site address even though despite my efforts, You can probably get closer or find the initial site for the video (I learned my lesson) I took it no farther.

Handsome Jack Does Things Naturally

Said it before but let me irriterate; Alive Natural Sound is the 'new' sound of classic rock. Me? I love classic rock. If you could take a gander at my permanent record collection you will find ample examples of the genre. Bob Seger, The Doobie Brothers, Foreigner... These records don't exist as a gimmick, they exist because I like them!

Per the usual, Handsome Jack shows up without a press release. That's fine by me. Those one-sheets are for those fucking freelance lemmings. Those who 'make a living' rustling up writing gigs to get money for their habits be they family building and/or drugs... I don't care. More power to them. I don't write cookie cutter reviews. All stuff, No fluf.

I heard of Handsome Jack from Zach Gabbard of the Buffalo Killers. Do What Comes Naturally is his first stint as a real-life record 'producer' and he is off to a great start! Hitting me as a mix of Kings of Leon, Canned Heat and The Buffalo Killers themselves (which totally makes sense) there's also an appreciated amount of grime too. The Creedence Clearwater Revival sort of grime... Have you ever seen a bayou? I have. Bayous are places where storm sewers empty into... Naturally hits with blues fused rock and roll that truly grips you. There's a certain charm in the mix... A real honesty that you find in those nowadaysands that are sectioned off from the mainstream... Handsome Jack deliver a confidence that only you can accept or deny. The truth isn't for just anyone these days.

The only factor that suffers with a band like Handsome Jack is the reality of the fact, that music, of any genre, suffers. There is a lot of music out 'there' riding invisible rays and available thru a multitude of formats and accessibilities. You gotta dig deep and find what connects with you before it's lost in the shuffle of the beast called Right Fucking Now. As listens of Naturally tallied, the more and more I appreciated the release as a whole... The sorts of fondness that would not be found in a big-shot music reviewer scanning ten seconds of each track then spit out a few adjectives to coincide with that press release. Fuck that.

Rock N Roll isn't dead if you don't want it to be. Let's try to spend some time with a CD or record or whatever, to connect once again. Yes, it comes naturally to just hit the button to most, but not because we want to, it's because some have too. Take some time with Naturally. Turn it up. Sit a while. Open up your mind and your ears. You just might like something after all without being given permissions by the industry.

Bad Earth (with Notes following)

We ride waves of
Electricity
We surrender as slaves
There is no option.
Just a shallow notion.
Death to mediocrity.

Let's all breath
Show our teeth.
Let the sidewalks bleed
Leave the wanters
wanting needs.

This shadow of a shadow
Becomes  feet deep.
A moment on occasion
With a brief explaination.

The Bad Earth don't stop.
It has no master
Delivering a disaster
Opposition becomes
Acquisition
In the Crow market
With a bloody rocket.

Relearn how to Seethe
Within a broken scene.
A ripped off sleeve
Making you a king.

Retake what has been lost.
'Be Your Own a Boss'
The system is lost.
There was no beginning
And you can't see the end
Bad earth will rise again.

A simple solution
To a cursed pollution.
The wish is best
Served cold with
A moment of rest.

Bring back
Bring back
The unused track
In a burlap sack
With a free dream
As odd as it seems
And let the chorus of razors
Speak for us again
Represent our hearts
As we push
the button to start.
The button to start
The button to start...
Something that's nothing
Is still something.
Still something.

NOTES: 'Bad Earth' was a reason that a non-Nick Knox member of The Vibrators used as an explanation for a microphone shocking Julie Social as she sang. Theice gentleman took it upon himself to solve the irritating problem. This poem is about that particular night at a Sudsy Malones before the University of Cincinnati ruined Short Vine.

Review Roctober [Campaign One]

Hello there... I may mean nothing to you but Thwart...! Blog has reached a milestone of sorts. This post is the 300th Poston Thwart! What better way to commemorate such a thing than to feature the first 'Campaign' for Thwart... The Review Rocktober Campaign!

During the fall of 2012, I reclaimed my timeless writings from the Blank Generation webzine site and decided to post the material in monthly installments on Thwart under the banner of Past-Blast.

Unfortunately, Past-Blast fluttered out due to pressing issues beyond my control and became stagnant. The remaining reviews and columns I penned for Blank Generation will now be cut apart from the huge Past Blast installment and worked into smallerencompasing campaigns.

ReviewRocktober is the first campaign for Thwart!

During Review Rocktober you, the reader, can read timeless reviews from

Generators, Rocket from The Tombs, New Wet Kojak, Mt. Tai, Burning Brides, Clinic,  Girlush Figure, Kent 3, Numbskull, Pink Holes, Uniform, Agitated, Crimson Sweet, New Creatures, Drones (Aus), Kill The Hippies, Rotten Apples, Thee Shams, Wipers, Donovan Stokes, Enon, Erase Erratta and French Kicks.
