The Accidental Artist aka Mike Spent

In a strike of pure happenstance, I ran across a facebook post from Mike Spent that he claimed was a mistake...'Mistake Art'. None-the-less, it grabbed my interest... I asked Mike to explain exactly how the art came to be.

"Ok what you are viewing is an N-2b extreme cold weather flight jack jet worn by the various branches of the armed forces today I took a digital photograph of it against the exterior of my current residence and cropped it and rendered it in my iPad photos app unknown forces took it from me and created an impressionist version of the jacket. It almost appears to be an oil painting, and has garnered attention in the art world and blogosphere. Thus, I am the accidental artist know as Mike Spent"

A search for 'Glitch Art' revealed that there is a movement attatched with Glitch Art... Surprising enough. It all goes back to Space Monkey John Glenn!

All In The Red Is All Right.

One of the best aesthetics of punk-rock (with a dash) is how it began, and maintained to this day, that YOU control your own fate. You wanna play guitar in a band? Do it. You wanna do your own magazine? Do it. You wanna record label? FUCKING DO IT!!!

One day to the next, the landscape of punk-rock and all of its associated sub-genres, things change fast. One day, Jonathan Stout mentioned a project he wanted to do and then, without funding, without press release, without any hesitation; LO-FI CITY was 'realized' and given instant validity because at least one person (proly more) made it so.

Matthew Archibalds  All In The Red is just one of the hand-made, severely limited CD-Rs featuring four songs recorded in a basement where you can hear the familiar grounding buzz of amplifiers  that gives Red the validity of something in the here-now. It's more. Much more...

It would be easy to look-up and then regurgitate a whole slew of this-n-that about who Matthew Archibald is and background info which, of course, would include what bands he is in, or came from and all-that, because Mr. Stout had surely told me and I didn't have it in my heart to just tell him that I wasn't really listening to him because he didn't have a toboggan on and I was admiring his thick, exposed, full-head of thick, shiny hair.

The four songs on this CD-R solidify the conspiracy that Steve Malkmus of Steve Malkmus & The Jicks fame is, perhaps, a clone of John Lennon who joins the  96.7% that dig Guided By Voices. The jams on Red reek of honesty, virtue, rawness and as loser/go-nowhere anthems of truth, justice and admissions of suicidal thoughts  One of the best aesthetics of punk-rock (with a dash) is how it began, and maintained to this day, that YOU control your own fate, you wanna play guitar in a band? My eyes are open and more importantly, my ears even more.

Reminisce The Second Battle of Manhattan... Again!

My [adult] re-reading of collected-volume comics from my childhood is getting verily interesting if I say-so myself. I'm finding that comics played a bigger role in my life than I had previously given it although, despite popularity, I've always said comic book titles like G.I.Joe, X-Men and Avengers were my heroes and shaped my morals into the person I am. Rick Veitchs' The One, has also re-done its job planting and watering  the eternal struggle of good, evil and how it relates to capitalism, socialism in an earthquake fist fight for dominance.

As a youth, I was afraid of nuclear war. I had a firm understanding of what assured mutual destruction was... I gave it attention to the possibilities of atomic destruction like it was a relative who lived in a different state... I thought about nuclear war and its link too the Cold War much more than a kid should... That paranoia culminates once more in my re-read of The One.

Initially, I didn't remember exactly what happened in The One but by no means would I consider The One a new read. The Cold War has left its mark on my psyche that will always be with me. The good versus bad is played out in The One in an expert and flashy fashion. My fear was a real one, a tangible problem to me. A thing that shaped me and ultimately leaves me questioning myself: was The Cold War climate really for the better or worse?

Next up is The Dark Knight Returns. So yeah, join me in re-opening whatever door that book opens...
